Tropical medical and maternity hospital (TMMH)

Tropical Medical and Maternity Hospital has made efforts in establishing services for Emergenecy Obstetric and Newborn Care (EMONC) services. In its new home, the hospital now has a theater that has been equiped with the basic equipment, drugs and supplies and personnel to handle all types of EMONC cases. The hospital now acts as a referral site for over five districts in Eastern Uganda. In the first four months of its establishment, the new site has provided EMONC services to over 160 mothers and no maternal mortality has so far been registered. The hsopital is geared towards providing adequate facilities for comprehensive EMONC services

Family planning services

TMMH is partnering with Marie Stopes Uganda (MSU) to provide free planning services to people in Sironko district. The Blue Star programme involves Community based distributors (CBDs)sensitizing communities and distributes FP cards to those who take the decision to get FP services. Those with cards are referred to TMMH from where they are counseled and the method of choice is provided. In this programme clients are encouraged and counseled to use long term FP methods like Jadelle, Implanon, IUDs, Tubal ligation and vasectomy. In addition condoms and other short term methods are also provided.

Maternal morbidity and mortality remains very in Uganda where over 430 mothers die per 100,000 live births. In addition, more that 6000 suffer serious complications. Fertility rate is very high at 6 and contraceptive use is 42%.

Family planning provision still remains very resulting into very high unmet needs. The challenges range from illiteracy, misconceptions among clients to complex health system issues.

The foundation for reproductive and tropical health (FORTH) aims to contribute to reduction in tropical and reproductive health problems through implementation of evidence based programmes and interventions.

The family planning programme aims at reaching communities with messages and services to improve uptake and utilization of FP services in order to reduce fertility rates and pregnancy related morbidity and mortality.
