Tropical Medical and Maternity Hospital (TMMH) is Partnering with Marie Stopes Uganda (MSU) to implement the Blue Star family planning programme. In this programme, MSU provides financial, capacity building and logistics and technical support to TMMH for mothers to receive free family planning services.
Since the inception of the programme in March 2012, TMMH has provided long term family planning methods to over 500 mothers. 12 staff and over 10 community volunteers have been trained in family planning.
Only 18 mothers have had had their methods removed for various reason implying that majority are still being proteced from unwanted pregnacies.
More work lie ahead as many mothers are not accessing this service due to misconceptions, poor access and poor male involvement.
Appreciation goes to MSU, Sironko and Bulambuli district local governments and communities for the support in implementing the Blue Star programme.
